MUSIC OF THE 1950`S:
THE FIVE SATINS
The Five Satins are best known for the doo wop classic "In the Still of the Night," a song that was popular enough to make the group one of the most famous doo wop outfits
significant events
The origins of the Five Satins lie in the Scarlets, a New Haven, CT, doo wop group led by Fred Parris. The Scarlets formed in 1953, while Parris was still in high school.
The group had a local hit with "Dear One" the following year. In 1954, Parris formed the Five Satins with vocalists Al Denby, Ed Martin, and Jim Freeman.
Within the next year, Parris had the group record "In the Still of the Night," a song he had recently written in the basement of a local church.
The first single the group released was "In the Still of the Night." The single was released on Standard Records in the spring of 1956. By the end of the year, it had been leased to Ember and became a huge hit, peaking at number three on the R&B charts and number 25 on the pop charts.
n 1960, "In Still of the Night" re-entered the pop charts thanks to its exposure on Art Laboe's first Oldies but Goodies compilation.
The repeated success of the single sparked another minor hit for the band in 1960, a cover of the standard "I'll Be Seeing You." During the remainder of the '60s and early '70s, Parris led various incarnations of the Five Satins through oldies revues in America and Europe; they also recorded occasionally during this time.

fashionable items
the band members mostly sported a suit and tie. they would groove up these suits by adding vibrant colors and various patterns. for instance they wore plaid in this picture. they usually all wore the same thing to signify that they were a band. they always dressed with class and rock. Personal choice of a Category
my personal choice of a category of music to fit them in is doo wop. with the loud instruments, combined with the soul foul singing and the groove this bands music is the definition of doo wop. if i had to closely categorize them with a genre today, i would most likely put them in the r&b genre. R&b requires a lot of soul and with the music they produced they have enough soul for the R&b category. i feel like a lot of other people would agree that this band could fit into many great genres but mainly R&b and doo wop. Album Review (Critique)personally i have nothing to critique about their music. i actually enjoyed listening to it, although its to nessecerly my favorite genre.
- Discuss what you liked or did not like about the album because it isn't my favorite genre i wouldn't really listen to it on my free time. my music taste is a bit more up beat and i thin that doo wop isn't really my cutoff tea. although i have much respect for this band and the hard work they put i to create a great album. - How did this album reflect on the culture of the decade? i think this album reflected on the decade because most of the music from that decade was doo wop. and he album is a perfect representation of the decades finest doo top. - What would the connection of this album be with the artwork of the decade? (which artist and painting would best describe this album? the music is very meaning fun much like the art work that was put out at that time. the art and the music both had a lot of soul. |
